Some videos about Iran, #9: The Fall Of The Great Empires, Storm Over Persia

The Fall Of The Great Empires, Storm Over Persia

2,500 years ago Persia was a great empire; regarded as the forerunner of the Roman Empire. However in spite of its size & strength it had an adversary that would seal its doom. Persia’s nemesis was a smaller empire – Macedon; ruled by Alexander The Great. This documentary shows how the failure of one king can lead to the downfall of a whole empire and how Alexander could manage to win against his superiour enemy – The Persians.

The Persian Empire was formed under Cyrus the Great, who took over the empire of the Medes, and conquered much of the Middle East, including the territories of the Babylonians, Assyrians, the Phoenicians, and the Lydians. Cambyses, Son of Cyrus the Great, continued his conquests by conquering Egypt. The Achaemenid Persian Empire was ended during the Wars of Alexander the Great, but Persian Empire arose again under the Parthian and Sassanid Empires of Iran, followed by Iranian post-Islamic Empires like Safavids, up to the modern day Iran.

Some videos about Iran, #8: Persepolis Recreated

Persepolis Recreated

Achaemenid Persia occupies a very important place among the great civilizations of the ancient world. In 550 BC., Cyrus, one of those rare leaders towards whom one cannot help but gravitate, laid the foundation of the largest empire the world had ever seen. His empire was quite unique because it was built on a model of tolerance and respect for other cultures and religions. So much so that the Old Testament regards Cyrus as the savior of the Jews from Babylonian captivity; while Xenophon, the 4th century BC Greek historian, refers to him as a man of wisdom, resilient spirit and guilelessness.

After Cyrus, Darius the Great elevated the Persian Empire to its zenith. The Empire now extended from the borders of India east to Greece on the Mediterranean, down to Egypt and Ethiopia in Africa and up to what is now Russia and Eastern Europe.

Twenty-eight different nations were brought together under the rule of a man who was hailed as “the King of the Kings”. It was under his rule that for the first time a standard weighing system was devised, Old Persian cuneiform script was invented, and gold and silver coins were minted and used throughout the Empire. As an administrator and a builder, Darius was brilliant. In Egypt, he had a canal dug between the Nile and the Red Sea, anticipating the modern Suez Canal. In order to govern their vast empire, the Achaemenid kings established not one but four capitals cities in various strategic region: Babylon, Susa, Ecbatana and finally the most magnificent of them, Parsa or Persepolis, which was known in its day as the “richest city under the sun”.

See Persepolis as it was 2500 years ago. Starting with the work of the German scholar Friedrich Krefter, who spend decades creating a model for a reconstructed Persepolis, film maker Farzin Rezaian and his team have produced Persepolis Recreated, a documentary that tries to visualize the beauty and dazzling splendor of Persepolitan palaces before their sad destruction by Alexander.

Some videos about Iran, #5: Rageh Inside Iran

Rageh Inside Iran

What do we really know about the Islamic Republic of Iran, aside from a Cold War rhetoric of politicians on both sides each accusing the other of evil? Rageh Omaar embarks on a unique journey inside what he describes as one of the most misunderstood countries in the world, looking at the country through the eyes of people rarely heard – ordinary Iranians. It took a year of wrangling to get permission to film inside Iran but the result is an amazing portrayal of an energetic and vibrant country that is completely different to the usual images seen.

Some videos about Iran, #3: Iran is not the problem

IRAN (Is Not The Problem) is a feature length documentary film responding to the failure of the American mass media to provide the public with relevant and accurate information about the standoff between the US and Iran, as happened before with the lead up to the invasion of Iraq.

We have heard that Iran is a nuclear menace in defiance of the international community, bent on “wiping Israel off the map”, supporting terrorism, and unwilling to negotiate. This documentary disputes these claims as they are presented to us and puts them in the context of present and historical US imperialism and hypocrisy with respect to Iran. It looks at the struggle for democracy inside Iran, the consequences of the current escalation and the potential US and/or Israeli attack, and suggests some alternatives to consider.

This 79 minute documentary features Antonia Juhasz, Larry Everest, and other activists and Iranian-Americans. The goal of this movie is to promote dialog and change the debate on Iran, so please consider organizing a screening, big or small, in your area.

Produced by Aaron Newman, an independent film-maker and part of the Scary Cow film co-op in San Francisco. He is an anti-imperialism/pro-democracy activist, founder of the SF Chomsky Book Club, and a member of Hands Off Iran. There are differences of opinion between many of the voices in this film, but all agree that a war would be unjustified. Below are brief video introductions for each of the people who participated.

Engineering An Empire: The Persians (History Channel program)

The Persian Empire was one of the most mysterious civilizations in the ancient world. Persia became an empire under the Cyrus the Great, who created a policy of religious and cultural tolerance that became the hallmark of Persian rule. Engineering feats include an innovative system of water management; a cross-continent paved roadway stretching 1500 miles; a canal linking the Nile to the Red Sea; and the creation of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Mausoleum of Maussollos. The rivalry between Persia and Athens led to a 30-year war known as the Persian Wars, the outcome of which helped create the world we live in today. Peter Weller hosts.

Some videos about Iran, #1: A Taste of Iran

Hi there,

The following videos are ones I found about Iran on Internet, which gives you some initial info about the country:

A Taste of Iran

In a new four-part series, the BBC’s Iranian Expert Sadeq Saba travels around his home country meeting its people and exploring the culinary history and culture of the different regions.

A Taste of Iran will be a journey of discovery of a land and its culture through its cuisine. In a series of four documentaries BBC’s Iran expert Sadeq Saba will guide the audience through different regions of Iran as he explores the culinary history and culture of Iranians.

But what differentiates this series from other travel shows and films about Iran is the access of the filmmakers to ordinary Iranians across the country and the filmakers depth of knowledge about Iran and Iranians.

In his sojourns through Iran Sadeq will meet interesting characters who will tell him about all things food related and beyond. He will travel to four regions of Iran and in each region he will find an extraordinary variety of food as well as cultural and historical backgrounds.

The regions are: 1- The capital, Tehran 2- North, provinces of Gilan and Mazandran 3- South and East, including provinces of Khorsan, Yazd, Baluchistan, Isfahan, Fars and Khouzestan and 4- West, provinces of Lorestan, Azerbaijan and Kurdistan.
